| Maintaining a well qualified laboratory staff |
In the early 1980’s a large percentage of engineering firms set out
to develop the capability to conduct soils laboratory testing in-house.
The challenge was to staff the laboratory with experienced personnel.
Some firms tried to staff the laboratory with entry level geologists and/or
engineers. However, these individuals typically had aspirations for
project level positions and their focus in the laboratory was temporary.
Other firms trained entry level technicians to perform the work in the
laboratory. These individuals were also often trained as construction
inspectors. When given a choice, it has been our experience that many
technicians preferred field work. In guiding the lab technician and
ultimately increasing their proficiency, we believe supervision is vital in
maintaining the accuracy of laboratory data.
