| Maintaining a well qualified laboratory staff |
In the early 1980’s a large percentage of engineering firms
decided to conduct soils laboratory testing in-house. Their challenge
was to staff the laboratory with experienced personnel.
Some firms trained entry level technicians to perform the work in
the laboratory. These individuals were also often trained as
construction inspectors. Many of these individuals gained more
experience with field work than in the lab.
In developing the lab technician and ultimately increasing their
proficiency, we believe experience and supervision is vital in
maintaining the integrity of laboratory data.
The challenge for many engineering firms is finding and keeping
well qualified personnel with the “hands on” experience to perform
soils laboratory testing. In addition, many small and medium sized
engineering firms find it difficult to financially justify maintaining a
qualified soils laboratory.
