Soils Laboratory Testing

Why Laboratory Testing is Important
We believe laboratory testing is essential when designing a project
based on the properties of soil samples.

There is little doubt that soils are a variable material and we cannot
assume, for example, that all “silty sands” have the same properties.
Silty sands can contain, according to the ASTM visual and mechanical
test methods, 12% to 49.9% silt. This is a significant range.
Although this range is accepted in procedurally identifying a soil using
both the visual and “as tested” methods, it can be misleading. An
engineer can better evaluate a soils suitability for foundations or as
backfill material, when provided with test data which more accurately
identifies the material.
When relying on visual descriptions alone, problem soils can be
overlooked, and suitable soil disqualified. Irregardless of the number of
tests an individual performs in the lab, it is very difficult for that person to
classify a soil based on the visual/manual method alone.

Laboratory test data will eliminate that guesswork and more
accurately identify a soil for engineering purposes.

Jay Kay Testing provides laboratory data which is accurate and on
time. The service we provide will compliment the excellent service your
clients have come to expect.
