Soils Laboratory Testing

Why Laboratory Testing is Important
We believe laboratory testing plays a vital role in the
identification of soils.

Soils consist of varying percentages of various materials.

For example, we cannot assume that all “silty sands” have the
same engineering properties. Silty sands can contain, according to
the ASTM visual and mechanical test methods, 12% to 49.9% silt.
This is a significant range.

Laboratory Testing further identifies the actual percentages of the
sand and the silt. The plastic characteristics of the soil also plays a
vital role in the identification process.

When relying on visual descriptions alone, problem soils can be
overlooked, and suitable soil disqualified. Irregardless of the
experience an individual has in visually identifying a soil, laboratory
testing will provide for a clearer classification of the soil.

Laboratory test data will eliminate the guesswork and more
accurately identify a soil for engineering purposes.
